Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu is a human rights and public litigation lawyer. He was also the NDC parliamentary candidate for Madina Constituency in the just ended Ghanaian election.

The young lawyer was born on 12th Feb, 1979 in Accra New Town to  Comfort Adzivor from Keji and Augustine Talkanu Sosu from Denu. Both of his parents were uneducated and belonged to very fetish background.

His grandmother was a queen of 57 idols whilst his grand father was the custodian of Torgbui Zikpi, represented by the royal piton. It is believed that this idol was imported from Dahome.

On her part, his mother as a little child was given as an atonement for the sins of her forefathers. She had to be a slave to the shrine until she was released when she was about 17years old.

Both uneducated, his father decided to learn a trade and got trained as a  tailor. However, his mother after her release from the shrine resorted to petty trading as a means of survival.

Lawyer Sosu sells at Mallam Atta Market

Lawyer Sosu and his sister had to assist their mother on daily basis to sell at the Mallam Atta market. He used to sell pepper, tomatoes, onions, fresh fish among others for survival. With the passage of time, the job options changed and he had to push trucks occasionally.

During evenings, he sold kenkey, fish and sometimes Kerosene. Sosu mostly combined these jobs with schooling and life was generally a matter of survival. He began nursery at Mmofrakyepen Preparatory School when he was 8 years old. Again, he started school late because most of his childhood years were spent on selling in the Malam Atta market.

Sosu became a complete street child when he was in St. John’s JSS, Kokomlemle. He was at the verge of dropping out of school at St. John’s Grammar School, Achimota. Gladly, the Village of Hope orphanage came to his rescue.

His parents had to move out of their family house to Taifa Borkina. Lawyer Sosu could not move to live with them because that will mean he will have to stop schooling. That was how he ended up at the Mallam Atta market. Night and day, the market became his home. Whilst in the Senior high school he had graduated from living at Mallam Atta market to living in a small wooden kiosk at Kotobabi.

When he became the Senior Boys Prefect and the SRC (Zone 5) President, he was still sleeping in that wooden kiosk at Kotobabi. He would sometimes beg for money before getting a car to school. Due to this situation, Sosu was never able to pay his school fees. Teachers who came to sack students for fees would often give him hot lashes but he always returned to school. He was a chronic fees defaulter. Apart from his admission fees, he never paid any other fees throughout his period at St. John’s Grammar.

How Sosu moved to the Orphanage

In the midst of this desperation, the school informed them of the need to pay their Registration fees for the final examination. Though the Headmistress of the school had shielded him throughout the period, it was obvious Sosu had no choice than to pay the said fees. It was at this point that Mr. Roland Bulley, who was a teacher and also a house parent at the Village of Hope orphanage introduced him to the orphanage which subsequently adopted him.

He made waves in mainstream Ghanaian politics prior to the 2020 Parliamentary and Presidential Election. Sosu won the NDC parliamentary primaries and became the Parliamentary candidate for the party in Madina Constituency.
