The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has expressed disappointment in the conduct of some Members of Parliament(MPs) during the election of Speaker of Parliament.

The GBA, in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 12 2021, described the event as worrying, a mayhem and misconduct capable of bringing the 8th Parliament into disrepute. The Association finds the actions embarrassing and unworthy of elected representatives of Ghanaians.

The Bar further explained that the actions constitute an affront to democracy and a dent on Ghana’s image as a leading example in Africa.

“The actions of the Members of Parliament are a blight on the democratic credentials of Ghana, which is a shinning example on the African continent. It is the expectation of the GBA that there will be no such chaotic and disorderly scenes in Parliament in future, and that the Palamentarians will always strive to safeguard Ghana’s democratic credentials”, part of the statement read.

Also, the Association frowns on bribery accusations against a Supreme Court Judge by Member of Parliament for Asawase Constituency, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka.

The Bar described the accusation as offensive and distasteful, capable of inciting public hatred for the judiciary and therefore calls on the MP to either substantiate the allegation or retract and apologize to the Judiciary.
